Zhejiang University establishes Institute for Advanced Study in Physics

On December 18, Zhejiang University celebrated the official inauguration of the Zhejiang University Institute for Advanced Study in Physics on Zijingang Campus.   

REN Shaobo, chairman of the University Council, DU Jiangfeng, president of Zhejiang University, DONG Guoxuan, executive vice director of the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and LIN Haiqing, the first dean of the Zhejiang University Institute for Advanced Study in Physics, jointly unveiled the Institute.

REN Shaobo stressed the transformative changes in scientific research paradigms amidst technological evolution and industrial transformation. He emphasized the pivotal role of basic disciplines, particularly mathematics and physics, as the bedrock of scientific development and technological innovation, as well as the key driver for core technological breakthroughs. The establishment of the Zhejiang University Institute for Advanced Study in Physics marks a significant stride towards the development of these basic disciplines. REN Shaobo expressed Zhejiang University’s commitment to charting a distinctive path towards building a world-class university distinguished by outstanding disciplines.

“I hope that the Zhejiang University Institute of Advanced Physics will pioneer in institutional innovation,” said DONG Guoxuan. “The discipline of physics has been thriving rapidly and maintaining strong momentum. The newly unveiled institute will systematically advance basic research, which is bound to have a profound impact on the scientific landscape.”

LIN Haiqing, as the inaugural dean, voiced his dedication to the challenging yet illustrious mission of building and developing the institute. “Scientists will engage in extensive international cooperation in basic research, promote interdisciplinary integration, and produce a batch of high-quality research findings, thus making unremitting efforts to build a top-notch discipline of physics,” said LIN.

Looking ahead, the Zhejiang University Institute of Advanced Physics will conduct original and cutting-edge basic research spanning theoretical physics, mathematical physics, statistical physics, biophysics, and computational physics. It aims to produce research results of international significance, foster global exchanges and cooperation, and position itself as a world-class, influential, and cutting-edge institute dedicated to basic research.
