From September 16 to 18, fall meeting of Chinese Physical Society (CPS2011) was held at Zhejiang University. An unprecedented 2000 members participated in this largest and most comprehensive academic conference of Chinese physics community.

President Yang Wei delivered a speech in the opening ceremony. He commented that physics is widely recognized as the most important branch of natural science. Physics has penetrated into all areas of human life and brought about many revolutionary breakthroughs and major impacts on other disciplines. Physics research has a long history in China and fall meeting of Chinese Physical Society is a major event in physics community. President Yang extended his wish that the conference will promote the further development of physics research in China.

To commemorate the distinguished physicists in China, Chinese Physical Society has set up Hu Fugang Prize, Rao Yutai Prize, Ye Qisun Prize, Wu Youxun Prize, Wang Ganchang Prize, Xie Xide Prize and Huang Kun Prize to honor the outstanding contributions of physics workers in different fields. Commissioned by Zhou Peiyuan Foundation, CPS has been selecting candidates for Zhou Peiyuan Prize since 1997.

This year, 14 scientists received recognition at the conference. Professor Hu Lin from Guizhou University has engaged in physical education in West China for 33 years. To honor his contribution to the international academic exchanges and development of the discipline in West China, Professor Hu was awarded Xie Xide Prize.

Professor Chia-Ling Chien from Johns Hopkins University delivered a lecture entitled “Spintronics and Spin Caloritronics in Magnetic Nanostructures”.  Academician Sun Changpu made a report on “Quantum Effects in Life and Bionic Quantum Devices”. Research Dai Pengcheng from Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a lecture on “Using Neutron as a Probe to Study magnetism in Iron Based High-temperature Superconductor”. The conference consisted of 17 difference venues on particle physics, field theory and cosmology, nuclear physics and accelerator physics, atomic and molecular physics and so on.
