Kuang-Piu Professor Da-Wen Sun of Zhejiang University is Elected as an Academician of Royal Irish Academy

On May 28, on behalf of the highest academic standards in Ireland, Royal Irish Academy held an admission ceremony to award the newly elected academician Professor Da-Wen Sun the certificate of academician. As an internationally renowned expert in food engineering, Professor Da-Wen Sun is a Kuang-Piu Professor at Zhejiang University and a tenured Professor at University College Dublin, Ireland.

 

 

Professor Da-Wen Sun graduated from South China University of Technology with a Ph.D. Degree. He engaged in research work at University of Stuttgart in Germany, British Queen’s University Belfast, Newcastle University and Sheffield University. Since 1995, Professor Sun has been teaching and doing research in University College Dublin, and is currently serving as a professor of food and biological engineering. Professor Sun is the first tenured Chinese professor in Ireland. He is the leading authority on food technology and food engineering. He has been conducting research projects on rapid cooling of cooked beef, new techniques to enhance the food-freezing process and beef quality evaluation with novel computer-vision techniques. He is the recipient of several international awards including the International Commission of Agricultural Engineering Merit Award. Professor Sun has published numerous high-level academic papers on food engineering and processing and edits key international journals in the area. 

 

Currently Professor Sun is the Director of UCD Food Refrigeration and Computerized Food Technology. He is also the Executive Committee and Honorary Vice President of International Commission of Agricultural Engineering, Fellow of Royal Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Ireland Institution of Engineers, and Europe and Africa Regional Director of Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological and Food Engineers. He is the editor-in-chief of Food and Bioprocess Technology—An International Journal and the serious editor of Contemporary Food Engineering book series.
