On Apr. 15, Dr. Han Weiqiang of Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, was appointed Pao Yu-Kong Chair Professor at Zhejiang University. The ceremony was held at the conference room in Department of Materials.

Dr. Han Weiqiang received a bachelor’s degree from Department of Physics in 1985 and in 1995 he graduated from the Department of Materials with doctoral degree, ZhejiangUniversity. He then went to National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials, Tsinghua University for post-doc research. From 1999 to 2000, Dr. Han spent a year at Max-Planck Institute for Metal Materials as a Humboldt Research Fellow. From July 2000 to May 2004, he was Associate Specialist at UC Berkeley. After 2004, he has been a scientist and professor at the Center for Function Nanomaterials, Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Dr. Han Weiqiang mainly focuses on nano-materials research. So far, dozens of his publications appear in Science, Nature and other high-level academic journals. His major academic achievements include the synthesis of one-dimensional GaN for the first time in the world which opened a new field of research. The study was published in Science in 1997, and was one of the “nano-tube studeis” --- one of the nine major technological breakthroughs of that year. Dr. Han Weiqiang was also involved in the world’s first carbon nanotube-based Nanomotor research with the publication of the study appearing in Nature in 2003, which also brought him R & D 100 Award in 2004.
