On November 18 to 20, 2018, the first national conference on soft matter mechanics was successfully held in Hangzhou. This conference was sponsored by soft matter mechanics working group of CSTAM, undertaken by Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Soft Materials and Intelligent Device Research. The conference was strongly supported by the Mathematics and Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Mechanics Society of Zhejiang Province and the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics of Zhejiang University. The conference was honorably chaired by Yang Wei, academician of Zhejiang University and Huang Yonggang, academician of Northwestern University. Fang Daining, academician of Beijing Institute of Technology, was the director of the academic committee. Qu Shaoxing, professor of Zhejiang University, was the chairman of the conference. More than 180 experts, representatives and students from domestic scientific research institutions attended the conference.

Chairman of the conference Qu Shaoxing presides the opening ceremony on 19th. Tang Yanan, director of the office of CSTAM, introduced the background and significance of the establishment of the working group on soft matter mechanics. Academician Zhu Weiqiu, executive vice President of SAA Shao Xueming, as well as Prof. Chen weiqiu made speech at the ceremony. On behalf of the organizer, they extended a warm welcome to all the invited speakers, delegates and students, and introduced the development of mechanics in Zhejiang University and soft matter mechanics in China from different perspectives. Several professors made speeches from 19th to 20th. They were Prof. Lu Tianjian from NUAA, Prof. Leng Jinsong, Prof. Zhong Zhen, Prof. Lv Haibao from HIT, Prof. Fen Xiqiao, Fen Xue from THU, Prof. Zhao Xuanhe from MIT, Prof. Zhou Jinxiong from XJTU, Prof. Chen Weiqiu and Prof. Qu Shaoxing from ZJU. They introduced the latest research achievements, development trends and challenges in the field of soft matter mechanics and related fields, which aroused a heated discussion among participants.

Soft matter mechanics is one of the important research directions in the field of mechanics in the new era, which contains many unresolved fundamental mechanical problems. At the same time, the in-depth study of soft material mechanics is also helpful to produce subversive technology and open up new engineering applications. The study of soft matter mechanics has the distinct characteristics of interdisciplinary integration. Its further development requires the establishment or development of new mechanical theory system, calculation method and experimental means, which puts forward an urgent requirement for academic exchanges. In this context, it is of special significance to hold the first national conference on soft matter mechanics. In this context, it is of special significance to hold the first national conference on soft matter mechanics.

Five excellent academic posters were awarded at the closing ceremony.
