Temporariness and its impact on the functioning and performance of organizations

Abstract

In increasing numbers, firms are setting up temporary organizations(TOs), to reach strategic and operational goals and to keep up with the fastpace of change in the technological and market environment. Despite the recognition that temporary organizations differfrom their non-temporary counterparts and the substantialamount of research on the nature and functioning of TOs, there is no consensus about what the temporarycharacter of TOs exactly entails. We identify different approaches to temporariness to be found in the literature, and argue that in order to advance systematic research on TOs, temporariness – understood as awareness of organization’s impending termination – needs to be recognized as the unique feature that distinguishes TOs from other organizational forms. Subsequently, we formulate propositions concerning the effectof temporariness versus non-temporariness functioning and outcomes of TOs.In so doing, we respond to the call for bestowing upontime and temporality a more prominent place in organization studies and in research on TOs in particular. In other words, what is temporariness and how it impacts TO functioning and outcomes are the focus of this seminar.

主讲人简介



Martyna Janowicz  is an Assistant Professor in Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She is also the program director for the Bachelor and Master Programs in Organization Studies, Operations Manager of Center for Innovation Research.
