摘 要:
Combinatorial auctions are sophisticated market mechanisms that sell multiple items in the same auction. Yet it remains challenging to explore bidder behavior since the auctions run in an environment where a small group of bidders participate in an auctions and behavior of one particular bidder can potentially affect the behaviors of others. Experimental analysis of this behavior remains difficult because it is nearly impossible to control for the type of innate behavior and capabilities of bidders in the experimental environment. We propose an agent-based modeling approach for studying bidder behavior; i.e., we develop software agents that simulate human behavior in continuous combinatorial auctions and validate them by replicating human bidder behaviors observed in experimental combinatorial auctions. We leverage these agents to simulate a wide variety of competition types, including experimentally unobserved ones that could not be studied otherwise. The capabilities of the proposed approach will enable more comprehensive studies (e.g., via richer controlled experiments) of bidding behavior in the complex and highly dynamic decision environment of continuous combinatorial auctions. The presentation will cover the basic idea of combinatorial auctions, a unique approach to solve the allocation decision in real-time that was developed in prior research, the observed behaviors of human bidders in prior experiments and the development of computational agents.
