Abstract:  

Personal fabrication technology has been widely applied to produce well-designed non-interactive objects. There is a hope to make both the modeling process and printing outputs more interactive, so that designers can get in-situ tangible feedback to fabricate objects with rich functionalities. To date, however, knowledge accumulated to realize this hope remains limited. In this talk, I will present two lines of research conducted by me and my collaborators at Cornell and Disney Research. The first line of work aims at facilitating an interactive process of fabrication. The second line of work concerns the fabrication of 3D printed objects that are interactive (e.g., motors and sensors). I will conclude the talk by outlining future research directions built upon my current work.

以3D打印技术为代表的个人化制造技术 (Personal Fabrication) 已在产品设计与原型开发中被广泛应用。然而目前为止,对交互性(Interaction)的探索尚未被引入到设计建模与成品制造的过程中。在设计建模的过程中,使用交互式制造 (Interactive Fabrication),可以向设计师提供及时的实物反馈 (Tangible Feedback);在打印成型的物品中添加交互性(Fabrication of Interactive Objects),可以设计出富有交互功能的物品。本报告将涵盖关于交互式制造与制造交互式物品两方面的研究,并在这些研究的基础上阐述个人化制造技术领域未来的研究方向。

Speaker:

Huaishu Peng is a PhD candidate and research assistant in the Computing and Information Science department at Cornell University, and a research associate at Disney Research Pittsburgh. His multi-disciplinary research interests range from computational design, robotic fabrication to material innovation. He builds software systems and machine prototypes that make the design and fabrication of 3D models interactive. He also looks into new techniques that can fabricate 3D interactive objects. His work has been published in international conferences such as CHI, UIST and SIGGRAPH and won Best Paper Nominee. His work has been widely featured by media such as Wired, MIT Technology Review, Techcrunch.com. Gizmodo.com etc.

彭怀舒,康奈尔大学信息科学系与计算机科学系在读博士,迪士尼研究院研究助理。他的研究兴趣主要包括数字化设计,机器人辅助制造与材料创新。彭怀舒博士的近期工作探索了通过多种方法实现交互式三维建模的可能性,其中亦涉及到对打印三维交互式物品的研究。彭怀舒博士的研究主要发表于CHI (The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems), UIST (The ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology) 和SIGGRAPH (The SIGGRAPH Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques) 等人机交互与图形学顶级会议,并获得最佳论文提名。这些工作也被Wired, MIT Technology Review, Techcrunch, Engaget等媒体广泛报道。自2013年至今,彭怀舒博士已多次在国际学术会议中参与并组织重要工作,包括CHI与UIST会议审稿人,CHI Late-Breaking Work成员副主席,TEI (The International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interactions) 会议工作坊发起人,SCF (The Symposium on Computational Fabrication) 会议学术委员会成员等。
