Dr. Mária Balážová is a Senior Researcher at the Centre of Biosciences, Slovak Academy of Sciences. Her research focuses on mitochondrial lipid metabolism, particularly on how phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin regulate energy production, organelle biogenesis, and inflammation. She was the first to demonstrate that phosphatidylglycerol actively controls mitochondrial bioenergetics in yeast, revealing a new layer of regulation in mitochondrial function. Dr. Balážová has authored numerous publications in leading international journals and serves as principal investigator on projects investigating mitochondrial phospholipids and their roles in cellular stress responses. Her current research focuses on the pharmacological modulation of mitochondrial lipid metabolism and its potential therapeutic applications in Barth syndrome and related disorders.
